Projects

Mindfire has significant exposure in the field of data integration and system interface development between healthcare systems. We have experience in integrating with e-prescription services, labs (LIMS), pharmacy, drug databases, billing systems, clearinghouses, hospital and health systems (HIS), legacy systems (EHR/PMS) etc.We describe below some of the healthcare software integration projects which have been successfully executed at Mindfire and will be glad to share in more detail incase you have an interest.

  • LabCorp - EMR HL7 Integration
  • Quest Lab - EMR HL7 Integration
  • AMS - Lab EMR HL7 Integration
  • Unsolicited Lab Result (ORU) Integration
  • Demographics Integration with AS400 System
  • Immunization SHOTS Integration

LabCorp - EMR HL7 Integration

Client:
HealthCare IT Company
Industry:
HealthCare
Technologies:
C#.NET, Windows Service, TCP/IP, HL-7, SQL Server 2005

The project aims at sending Lab orders to Laboratory Corporation of America® Holdings (LabCorp®) from an EMR application. The patient details (ADT) and Order Messages (ORM) were built as per the wide Hl-7 standards, taking into account the customization needed for LabCorp and these order messages were sent as TCP/IP streams between two end points on a secure VPN connection. The result messages (ORU) were received employing the same technique; were parsed using a windows service, customized interpretation was done and were attached to the original order/patient in the EMR.

Custom reports, Manifests, Requisitions, Bar Code generation, Specimen Label are also done as a part of this system as and when necessary.

Quest Lab - EMR HL7 Integration

Client:
HealthCare IT Company
Industry:
HealthCare
Technologies:
C#.NET, Windows Service, ASP.NET Web Service, HL-7. SQL Server 2005

The project aims at sending Lab orders to Quest Diagnostics® (Quest®) from an EMR application. The patient details (ADT) and Order Messages (ORM) were built as per the wide Hl-7 standards, taking into account the customization needed for Quest and these order messages were sent to a web service from a windows application using secure connection.

The result messages (ORU) were received employing the same technique; were parsed using a windows service, customized interpretation was done and were attached to the original order/patient in the EMR. The "printable" (PDF) results were also downloaded and attached to the patient's archive in the EMR's Document Management System (DMS).

Custom reports, Manifests, Requisitions, Bar Code generation, Specimen Label are also done as a part of this system as and when necessary.

The challenges here were that the lookup values to be used were different for different Business Units of Quest and depending on the clinic's location, the test order codes and other test details like AOE info were generated at runtime. We also developed an update service that will hit the Quest webservice and update the list of orders and other info (CDC) based on the Business Unit.

AMS - Lab EMR HL7 Integration

Client:
HealthCare IT Company
Industry:
HealthCare
Technologies:
C#.NET, Windows Service, ASP.NET Web Service, XML, HL-7. SQL Server 2005

The project aims at sending Lab orders to Affiliated Medical Services Laboratory, Inc.(AMS) from an EMR application. The patient details (ADT) and Order Messages (ORM) were built as per the wide HL-7 standards, taking into account the customization needed for AMS and these order messages were sent to a webservice from a windows application using secure connection. The result messages (ORU) were received employing the same technique; were parsed using a windows service, customized interpretation was done and were attached to the original order/patient in the EMR.

Unsolicited Lab Result (ORU) Integration

Client:
HealthCare IT Company
Industry:
HealthCare
Technologies:
C#.NET, Windows Service, SFTP, HL-7, SQL Server 2005

The requirement was to receive HL7 ORU files over SFTP and then parse and match them to the correct patient in the EMR System. End to End Services were deployed to send the files over SFTP and then a special service was developed to monitor file arrival. The parsing was done using custom parsing techniques and a very detailed patient matching algorithm was developed for this project which will help in matching a file with a patient by comparing the demographics information present in the file with the EMR DB. The algorithm's functionality can be controlled by the end user. The success rate of the algorithm was 100% and there was not even a single case of false positive matches.

Demographics Integration with AS400 System

Client:
HealthCare IT Company
Industry:
HealthCare
Technologies:
C#.NET, Windows Service, ASP.NET Web Service, HL-7. SQL Server 2005 , MS Access

The project aimed at eliminating the double entry made by some users wherein they have to enter patient details once in an EMR web application and then in an AS400 Practice Management System. The data from the EMR DB was extracted, built as Hl7 and sent to a webservice, hosted at the client end. Then using MS Access as an intermediate, a windows service was employed to interact with the AS400 system. Here, the notable thing is that it was not a DB level integration but the automated entries were made in the AS400 system at the UI level.

Immunization SHOTS Integration

Client:
HealthCare IT Company
Industry:
HealthCare
Technologies:
C#.NET, Windows Service, sFTP, HL-7, SQL Server 2005, HL7, VXU, CPT Code, CVX Code

The users of the EMR were doing double work by entering the data once in EMR and then again in the health regulator's repository site (Florida SHOTS Immunization Repository a case in point). We automated this process by picking up the data from the EMR and then by constructing a VXU File (Main segment being the RXA) and sent the same to the regulator's FTP site using sFTP based windows service. The whole process was automated in such a way that the user was not required even to click a button. The vaccines were sent in the CPT code or in the CVX code format.
